Pacifiers and thumb sucking

Babies love suckling because this is how they feed and relax. Generally, as your child grows older, the urge to suckle will slowly diminish on its own. If this isn’t the case, however, it’s preferable to allow the continued use of a pacifier instead of thumb sucking.

It will be much easier for you to control when your child engages in this activity. Also, you should never coat the pacifier with sugar, honey or syrup. It is preferable that your child stops using a pacifier BEFORE age 3. Continued suckling (pacifier or thumb) AFTER the permanent teeth have developed can result in various problems ranging from teeth movement to a reshaping of the jawbone.
